2014 Unionville Festival

Finally some good weather!  Was looking forward to this event for a while.  With the crappy long winter we had it just seemed like forever before Jakes on Main could get that patio open! With the nicer weather I knew it was going to be packed.

For some reason Unionville Festival organizers closed down the street party that was supposed to happen and kept Main St open.  Jakes still extended the patio to the street with fences to allow more patrons to enjoy some open air tunes and beverage drinking.  Jakes new patio bar was in full swing and I brought some additional speakers and placed them outside to get some more volume.  Placing speakers at Jakes is not so easy and even though it was in open air it sounded surprisingly good with decent low end.

Finally got to open the windows fully in the bar area.  It's a make shift DJ booth but I love the view to the patio and the fresh air.

Favorite moment of the night for me is when I dropped Usher's "Yeah (2014 DJ Kontrol Remix)" right after the build up in "Turn Down for What."  Big reaction came from the crowd with hands in the air. Thought about it in the car on the drive in.  Guess it worked!

Also played for the first time a tune called "The Prize" by a local artist who usually comes by on Friday nights.  Didn't see him out there but wanted to play it anyways.  Have a listen here and show some support! You can check out more of their stuff at soundcloud.com "wearetheschool."

Unfortunately could not make it out Saturday night as I was tied up with another event.  Probably would have went down early to catch all the other stuff going on in town.  Sunday was a right off so couldn't make it.  But by the sounds of it another successful festival.

Last post was October 13th.  Shame!  Not for lack of events though. Will post some move events in the coming weeks.

St Patrick's Day!

Geez...last post was in January! Well...hockey refereeing has finally come to an end for the season. What a time killer! So figured let's get the blog going again...

Last week was St Patty's day! Can say I have never DJ'd a party with green beer so was looking forward to it. Was invited the week before by Mike at the Dragon Bistro, my old stomping ground. Jakes has a band every year so I was out! So played traitor Dj for a day.... Anyhow had to quickly get a catalogue of tunes going. Some quick internet research and itunes and I found myself with a play list of over 100 St Paddy's day favorites! itunes is great for this type of thing by the way. Picked up two 50 pack albums for less then $10 each!

Unfortunately the crowd was not where the ownership wanted it to be but there was a steady flow of customers coming in to enjoy some beer with green dye dropped in and an Irish flavored menu (damn I missed out on on the Irish Stew...) I did imagine an out of control drunk fest where everyone was singing top o the lungs with singing and dancing on the tables but that didn't happen. Nonetheless still had good time playing tunes as always!

I mixed in a bunch of top40 and rock with the Irish music. But here were some of my favorite St Paddy's day tracks on the night:

DJ Marathon!

This past weekend I was asked to come into the Dragon Bistro on a Saturday afternoon a lot earlier then normal to play tunes on the patio.  Markham was holding its first annual...wait... know one seems to know...Unity Festival.  Mainstreet Unionville was closed down...food sold on the streets and bands playing at the band shelter. 

Mike at the Dragon Bistro thought it would be good to come in and play some good patio tunes and get some people into his restaraunt...or he just wanted to here some good music while he manned the bbq on the street for several hours!

I was vacationing at the time at my cottage...well still am as I write this.  So after 4 days of beautiful sunny weather lake side I headed into Unionville to hang out on the patio with a full bar at my disposal, good food and of course great staff down at the Dragon.  Sounded good to me!

I started playing at 2pm and by 9:00pm...7 hours later I had played 115 songs with only three tracks played twice...by request I might add!

It was actually a bit of a challenge since it is not a dancefloor.  It's a patio where people are eating and drinking and enjoying themselves...and singing along very loud on occasion.  So what do you play?  A whole wack load of stuff I guess but let me share with you some of fav patio tunes...on a nice hot summer day and a cold beer in hand...

Unionville Festival - Dragon Bistro

This weekend the quaint town of Unionville, nestled inside the town of Markham, held their annual street festival and as usual Mother nature did not seem to cooperate.  Friday saw record rainfalls and Saturday with a brief moment of sun quickly changed back to heavy rainfall as I got to the bar.  The weather did not seem to stop people from coming out though and the bar on the night was packed!

Unfortunately the Festival seems to bring out the worst in some of the local young adults who seem to use the festival as an excuse to drink above and beyond what is reasonable.  Lucky for us at the Dragon, Mike the owner was able to keep local drunktards out sans security and the night went without any serious incidents. 

The rain subsided enough for a lot of patrons to use the patio and even though the furniture was still pretty soaked most seemed not to mind.  I brought an extra speaker and had sound outside as well as in.  I also connected to the house system so everyone had the chance to feel what I was playing.

I mixed it up starting out with some good bar/drinking tunes.  We got a makeshift dance floor going with a long set of top40 dance music and then I totally mixed it up with some hiphop, reggae and some classic 90s hits including "Informer" by Snow and Maestro Fresh Wes' "Let Your Backbone Slide".  I was having a little fun....:)

Ode to Adam Yauch

With the recent announcement of Beastie Boys Adam Yauch passing at the age of 47 due to cancer the twitter space was flooded with tweets remembering "MCA."

 

On Saturday night I thought it be appropriate to pay my own homage to the influential rapper by including some of his tracks in my set. A few weeks ago my sister in law was in New York and she bought me a T-shirt that said "You Gotta Fight For Your Right to Party". Those words of course were made famous by a track from the Beastie Boys debut album "Ill Communication" in 1986.

As I drove down Main St to the bar the street was packed...I guess it took the warmer weather to get people out of hiding. The bar itself was also very busy on the night. Normally I start off my set with some laid back tunes but this time around I decided to change things up and started off with another track from Beastie Boys debut album "Brass Monkey." The reaction from the crowd was most positive...I think I caught everyone by surprise.

Ongoings at the Bistro

Been a couple of weeks since I've posted about the Bistro.  These last two weeks I have been looking to change things up a bit adding some new...and by new I mean new...and classic tunes to the line up.  We celebrated a few birthdays as well and it was nice to see some of the regulars coming out to party. 

I have been digging around the archives to add to my collection since I've been getting a lot of requests for 90s hip hop..  Also for some reason had no Tragically Hip on my laptop...which of course is a Tragedy!!

The thing is I don't carry my whole music collection with me.  Especially easy listening tunes.  My music selection on my laptop is more geared for mobile events where I try to keep a dance floor full!  Although there is some dancing at the Bistro for the most part I also try and play some tunes that people can just listen to and enjoy their drink especially at the beginning of the night.


It's funny how in the internet age people think or expect that you have every piece of music out there and look at you funny when you tell them you don't have the track they are requesting!   I do however right down the requests and try and have it available the following week by getting the song legally...

The Dragon Bistro - March 31

So a few weeks ago when I got back into Djing at the Bistro the owner Mike and I had a conversation about me just playing in the bar area...create a nice vibe for the people enjoying a drink...or drowning their sorrows after yet another Leafs loss and 8th playoff miss in a row...

One month later and we've somehow turned the bar into a nightclub!  We continued straight off where we left last week...well I tried to warm up the bar a bit...but didn't take long until the requests for new top40 dance started coming in.  A group of my local friends stopped by after they heard I was back so it made it a fun night!

Regardless... I go with the flow and have fun mixing it up.  This weekend was pretty top 40 heavy but I couldn't help but dive into some of the classics.

Apparently there is a birthday party reservation for this upcoming Saturday.  So looks like a full house once again.  See what I can come up with this week...and we'll see you Saturday night!

The Dragon Bistro - March 24

After a week hiatus last week due to St Patty's Day (they brought in a live band) I was back at it last Saturday night. When I got to the bar just prior to the end of the Leaf game this time around the bar was jam packed.

After a quick setup I got started right after the Leafs lost in OT. I went with some classic tunes with Oasis, Sugar Ray, The Proclaimers and with patrons starting to sing along to  'Home for a Rest' by Spirit of The West and 'It's the End Of The World As We Know It' by Great Big Sea I knew we were in for a fun night!

There was as 40th Birthday celebration and soon enough the group of people celebrating started up a makeshift dance floor. Special shout out to Martin!

As you can see from the set list below It was quite different from 2 weeks before. A lot more energetic last night... And we went the distance closing up around 2:45am! I did my best not to repeat any tracks... Got to keep it fresh. Did pretty good apart from maybe 3 or 4 tunes.

The Dragon Bistro - March 10

Last night I started playing again at the Dragon Bistro in Unionville (www.thedragonbistro.com).  This time around though the owner Mike wanted to keep the music in the bar area which meant no dancefloor. He wanted me to just play some tunes to create a decent vibe for the patrons having a few drinks...

It was as a little different for me since normally I am banging out music to keep a dance floor going.  So instead my set list was filled with tracks I normally don't play.  I brought a simple set-up...my new Traktor S2, my lappie and one powered monitor.  I also plugged into the house system to spread the sound throughout the bar area.

It was good times last night....  nice laid back atmosphere, great staff, drinks with some buddies and listening to some good music.
